Churchill’s Mariachi Band: A New Sound From The Orchestra

While many things are different at Churchill this year, from seeing everyone wearing a mask to the number of kids wandering the halls being a little bit different, there are some new opportunities being offered despite the pandemic. An example of this would be Orchestra Director Jason Thibodeaux creating a mariachi band for interested musical students.

The band, dubbed “Churchill Mariachi,” meets every Tuesday and Thursday morning in the Orchestra building from 8 am to 9 am to practice their music. Currently, only band, orchestra, or choir students can join, as the band is looking for students with music experience. Learning mariachi means learning all new instruments, but Thibodeaux believes that having previous knowledge of music reading and music theory is very helpful for this.

The group received their instruments at the beginning of October and have been practicing since October 6 and already sound amazing. Members continue to practice songs such as De Colores, La Valentina, Los Golondrinas, Carino, and El Rey. They don’t have any performances scheduled yet, as the group is still working to learn new chords and memorize the sets, but hope to reach that level soon.

Many are looking forward to see what Churchill Mariachi has in store! If interested in joining, email Jason Thibodeaux at jthibo@neisd.net.
