Valentine’s Day Bash

Well let’s see, I think Valentine’s Day is really stupid for a lot of reasons. First of all, those couples aren’t being “cute”; they are being disgusting. Secondly, I have always had horrible experiences on Valentine’s Day. For example, one time I had two valentines (‘cause I’m just that popular) and one of them gave me this pretty cool heart shaped glass necklace. When I went to put it on, the heart fell off onto the ground and completely shattered! It was so embarrassing and  I almost cried. I felt so bad, you have no idea. It just ruined my whole day, especially when my other “valentine” didn’t get me anything! Horrible, horrible, horrible! And another time, a long, long time ago, my sister (who was in kindergarten at the time) came home on Valentine’s Day with all this stuff from her “boyfriends” and I hadn’t gotten anything (!) from anyone, not even friends. And then, to make things worse, another little boy came to the door with a bundle of roses and chocolates for her. I WAS SO MAD (hence the all capital letters).

I also think it’s pointless for people to get all wrapped up in Valentine’s Day because it’s stupid. Even the candy is extremely gross and you get so much chocolate you gain 100,000,000,000,000,000 pounds (to save you the trouble of counting, that’s 100 quintillion).  That isn’t cute. Plus those little heart things, Sweethearts, are gross! FYI, no one actually ever eats those because they taste like barf.

People always complain about how they need to lose weight and it’s like everyone’s new year’s resolution but then Valentine’s Day comes along and ruins it! No one can escape the temptation of all those sweets! It pretty much crushes hopes and dreams of achieving life long goals!

Another huge problem is movies about Valentine’s Day. They portray it all wrong. Obviously none of that mushy stuff ever happens. It’s basically false advertisement when you really think about it. It would be just peachy if some man came and swept me off my feet and took me to some magical place where everything is perfect, but umm guess what? THAT NEVER HAPPENS IN REAL LIFE! People, get your life together. If you’re sitting around waiting for your lover to come and “rescue” you on Valentine’s day, don’t.

Even though this is one of the worst celebrated holidays, it is very, very lame and it is inexcusable to have an Anti-Valentine’s Day party. Come on, people, that’s stupid. I mean, I guess Valentine’s Day isn’t ALL bad. I guess there might be something positive about it. I just can’t think of anything!

Girls Soccer Starts Preparing for New Season

The girl’s soccer team has been working hard to get ready for their new season. Like several other extra extracurricular activities, they have had to make adjustments in order to fit the new schedule.

In preparation for the upcoming season, they have been hitting the weight room hard doing a lot of running and intense strength conditioning. They’re working on new strategies with 11 vs 11  scrimmages and many practices.

“I’m really looking forward to just watching them progress and get better and hopefully make it further in playoffs,” Coach Aguilar said.

The schedule change has had a huge effect on when the practices are held, which is causing the team to adapt in new ways. They are  now being held in eighth period and after school which makes the players feel rushed to get changed on time. Players are also having to deal with the e heat that comes with the afternoon compared to when they practiced in the cool early morning last year. In addition, there is no period for study hall.

“Even though we have a lot of returning players, I feel they are much more experienced and have improved from last year,” Coach Aguilar said.

In the past when it came to choosing a captain the combined vote of all the girls and the coach determined the winner. But with a new head Coach things will be a little different. Since there aren’t very many seniors this year Aguilar might have both a junior and senior representative as captain.

“When choosing a captain we look for leadership potential. It’s not based on skill,” Coach Aguilar said.

The season starts in January, but tryouts were held at the beginning of the year. If there are people who are interested in being a part of the team, additional tryouts will be open to anyone November 29-30 after school.

The golf team is coping with many new changes concerning practice times and schedule changes.During the summer, in preparation for the  year,  the members had a few obligations to the team.

“We asked them to play at least 10 competitive rounds to help improve their play,” Coach Spivey said.

By the way things turned out at the boys first tournament, the extra dedication is paying off.

“The team is an  improved young group with much potential who can even get to State if they work at it,” Spivey said, when discussing that the main goal of  taking the boys and girls teams all the way to State.

Even with all the optimism, the new schedule is causing the golf team to adapt in ways they haven’t had to in the past. Practice time suffers forcing the kids to start earlier and end later. They also had to break down into a JV period and varsity period adding some new challenges, however they refuse to be discouraged.

“Our returning varsity is coming back with better experience and should be much improved as individuals and as a whole,” Spivey said.

The first girls’ tournament will be the Texas Shootout hosted by NEISD at the Silver Horn golf course October 15-16. Fans can help support them by purchasing tickets for the tournament as well as signing up for the Putt for Dough contest later on in the year.
