“And the nominees are…”

The time is up and the wait is over it’s time for the countdown to begin for the 53rd Annual GRAMMY Awards.

According to many online sources, this year’s award ceremony is going to include the most jaw-dropping and competitive nominees of Record and Album of the Year. This, of course, will result in memorable events, classy dresses, and rocking performances.

What’s up to bat this year for the four main categories?

Starting with Record of the Year, “the nominees are…”  Nothin’ On You by B.o.B featuring Bruno Mars, Love The Way You Lie by the smash hit duo Eminem and Rihanna, F *** You by Cee Lo Green, Empire State of Mind by Jay-Z and Alicia Keys, and lastly with Need You Now by Lady Antebellum. Personally I am freakin’ in love with Love the Way You Lie by Eminem featuring Rihanna. Oh my goodness, with his insane raps and Rihanna’s fiery red hair in the music video and the things they say, how can anyone not love it? Even if people hate it, it gets stuck in their head from being on the radio every 45 minutes so they cannot help but love it in the end.

Nominees for Album of the Year, include the contenders The Suburbs by Arcade Fire, Recovery by Eminem, Need You Now by Lady Antebellum, The Fame Monster by Lady Gaga and Teenage Dream by Katy Perry. With the competition really heating up between Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Eminem. First, Katy Perry, has had an unbelievable year with her first starter album I Kissed A Girl and being on the top sell out list. Katy Perry is all about shock, with I Kissed A Girl, then marrying a crazy guy, Russell Brand. No wonder she’s nominated for Teenage Dream. And Lady Gaga? What the heck? Where did that girl come from? With her out-of-this-world outfits-literally. Corresponding with her disturbingly unique music videos such as Telephone. But Lady Gaga owns at the GRAMMYS taking home practically every award so I can only hope Katy Perry wins, Lady Gaga will just win it again next year! Finally, the one and only Eminem. He’s a beast with his remarkable raps.

Moving on to Song of the Year, and for this category is Beg, Steal or Borrow with songwriter Ray LaMontagne; F*** You with song writers Broody Brown, Cee Lo Green, Ari Levine, Phillip Lawrence and Bruno Mars; The House That Built Me with songwriters Tom Douglas and Allen Shamblin; Love the Way You Lie written by Alexander Grant, Skylar Grey and Marshall Mathers; and lastly Need You Now once again, by Dave Haywood, Josh Kear, Charles Kelley and Hillary Scott. It is my and my fellow news writer Cassy Sunderland’s hope that Need You Now wins this award. Need You Now was such a good song with its amazing harmony and beat in a way that leaves listeners breathless-should definitely win the GRAMMY.

Closing up the big category of Best New Artist nominees are Justin Bieber, Drake, Florence & the Machine, Mumford & Sons and Esperanza Spalding. This will lead to a close competition between Drake and Justin Bieber because, really, who has ever even heard of Esperanza Spalding? Since we can count on Selena Gomez’s vote for him, we can only hope that Justin takes it away. Justin Bieber is a phenomenon with his flipped hair-do and songs, teenagers can’t help but drool all over him.

With the week consisting of music, fashion, arts education, and philanthropy, including the Salute To series, GRAMMY Career DaySM and GRAMMY Style Studio. PALS

Why join PALS?

“I really wanted to be involved in something at school… since I was in middle school.  I love kids and being a mentor, ” Brandi Morse senior PAL said.    PALS are involved in several activities.  They take elementary students to home football games  provide them  with “Lion’s Den” shirts.  In addition, PALs interact with ALE students and provide them a shoulder to lean on.

“There’s too many to list… but mainly you have to be someone your kids and peers can look up to,” Morse said.

Currently the  PALS  are in mediation training and are preparing for upcoming projects.  Every Friday they share a “highlight” and a “bummer” of the week.  This helps them get good feedback and helps them build a better self esteem as well as learn how to make this school a better place.

PALS  must be alcohol and drug free and must sign a contract before they enter PALS.  This helps them be a positive role model for our school and students. PALS also gives students a chance to make true friends.

“I’m really excited to be friends with the other PALS,” Morse said.  “I’m really, really excited to be part of such an awesome organization!  I’m super excited about it.”

Orange Leaf

Tired of work, school, and stress…need a place to unwind? If so, Orange Leaf is the place to go. It has a soothing environment where one can sit back and relax. It’s a great place to work on homework or take advantage of free Wifi. But the real reason to visit Orange Leaf  is their famous frozen yogurt. They have  forty four flavors, including white chocolate, chocolate, taro, cookies and crème, pomegranate, red velvet, peach, coconut, original tart, confetti cake, cheese cake, passion fruit, lemon and many more.

On a recent visit to Orange Leaf this past weekend I walked into the carefree environment and enjoyed some of this delicious frozen yogurt. Upon entering customers pick up a bucket and serve themselves as much yogurt as they want, mixing any of the flavors they desire. All of the flavors are dairy based except for pineapple which is water based. Next, add any combination of toppings such as fresh fruit, chocolate chips, m&ms,  or skittles.  One of their most famous toppings is called popping boba. It is a Japanese topping which pops in your mouth!  Lastly, an Orange Leaf employee weighs your yogurt by the ounce with each ounce costing forty cents.

People may think “frozen yogurt? How unhealthy…” WRONG! Frozen yogurt is very good for the body.  It prevents constipation, diarrhea, and harmful bacteria growth, plus it helps strengthen the immune system. Orange Leaf is where yummy meets healthy. So stop by Orange Leaf’s delicious and relaxing atmosphere, located on Loop 1604 W in the Vineyard Shopping Center.
