Cheering at MacArthur

Garner’s 8th graders that are going to be freshman at Mac next school year had the opportunity to try out for the JV or freshman cheer team. I’ve been cheering since I was three, and I’ve always loved it. I did take some seasons off from it, but I always kept tumbling to get better at my skills. At first I didn’t know if I wanted to try out because it was going to be a little different from all star cheer, what I’ve always done. However, I wanted to try something different. Try outs weren’t that hard. We had to learn a dance and a cheer. The real tryout day came and I was really nervous, but I did a good job performing, and that night they posted who made it…. and I was one of them! I was very excited to be one of the few 8th graders who made it.

Cans Film Festival

The 1st Annual Garner Middle School Cans Film Festival will be held on April 15, 2016 from 3:30pm – 5pm. Admission to the festival is two cans of food. The theme of the festival is “Heroes!” and each student will choose one out of four categories to submit their videos: CG, stop-motion, live action or music video. Each team will create either an individual movie, or a group of up to four people. Each movie will last 30-120 seconds long with a title page at the beginning and credits page at the end. The deadline to submit will be April 1, 2016. When you are ready to submit your video, save it to a memory stick and give it to Mrs. Cooper, Ms. Mosqueda, or Mrs. Pitman.

Each team will choose their own hero theme. It has to be made up and original, not from any movie or comic that has already been created by someone else. Be creative with your characters and setting. You can use any material needed from house or school. Don’t forget to put names in the credits. If your video is short but meets criteria, you can put bloopers with the credits at the end. Has to be hero themed. Anything else will be denied and not used during the festival. We will have trophies/medals for the movies that win first, second, third place in their category, and a first place overall trophy/medal. I can not wait to see all the talent that is in store for our first film festival.

Veterans Day

What is Veterans day? Why do we even include Veterans Day in our lives? It is a time to honor our current heroes who fight for our freedom. It is only fair that we honor the people who fight for us. November 11, 2015 we will have our annual Veterans Day assembly that will recognize our veterans in the community. Harry Wurzbach will be lined with the NJHS students holding American flags in the morning. Orchestra has prepared pieces to play. Our choir will be singing appropriate celebratory songs. Mr. Sellers, our assistant principal, will be speaking about the significance of this day. We hope to have parents and loved ones attend the assembly, especially veterans in our community.

Veterans Day was created after World War 1 ended. In November 1919, President Wilson declared November 11th as Veterans Day. Today, Veterans Day is a day for us to recognize the veterans in the community. November 11th became a legal national holiday in 1938. After World War 2, Veterans Day was for all veterans in a war.
What can we do to recognize the people who fought for our freedom? Why do people forget the significance of this day and take for granted someone else’s sacrifice? Why can people not see that our freedom today is a liberty we have because someone else fought for it? We should support our veterans by thanking them for their service. Thank you to all our Veterans in the community, and school.
