Sock Day – Red Ribbon Week

By Luke

October 20, 2015 is the first day of Red Ribbon Week. Today at Garner Middle School the students  were allowed to wear crazy socks,  which is anything in your imagination. Today I walked around Garner and got to see the fun socks that the students where wearing. They are down at the bottom so I can show you the fun!

Although Red Ribbon week is happy for some, it is also to remember DEA Agent Enrique Camarena, who stood up against the destruction of drugs and was killed in the line of duty. Around the world, people wear red ribbons to honor him and his heroism. National Family Partnership was the first to sponsor the first Red Ribbon Week.

Some people think of drugs on red ribbon week but other people like me also think it is a time to remember the family members that have had the battle for cancer. Many drugs cause cancer and other disease so that is why we must stand up to drugs. We thank Enrique Camarena for his stance and what he did for the world and to stop drugs.

N.E.I.S.D Pink Day

By: Hannah. G

Friday, October 9, 2015 will be N.E.I.S.D’s pink day, which is when schools in the N.E.I.S.D district will wear a pink shirt and jeans to support breast cancer awareness. Breast cancer has actually decreased in the past decade in the USA, but in other places it has increased.  Fewer women have died due to breast cancer, but the amount of people diagnosed with breast cancer has risen. Male breast cancer has lower rates than the women, but the deaths are just as fatal.

North America has the highest incidence for breast cancer. The more industrialized the country, the more incidence’s it has then non-industrialized countries. Immigrants mimic their home country origins for breast cancer health and awareness, but after several generations in an industrialized country, it increases their breast cancer statistics.

Women all over the globe have suffered from breast cancer that could have been passed on genetically. What can people do to help women with this cancer? Currently scientist all over the world are trying to create a pure antidote that will be swiftly, non-painfully, and very reliable to cure the cancer patient. For now we all need to support the cancer patients by wearing pink on Friday, October 9, 2015. Will you step up and support breast cancer awareness?

Orchestra Holiday Concert

Orchestra has had a lot of great concerts but by far people have liked the holiday concert. The concert took place on December 15. The Garner orchestra played many different songs such as Ukrainian bell carol, Sleigh Bells Jingling, Frosty the snow man, and many other songs. The concerts duration of time was about one hour and ten minutes. The  concert took place in the auditorium and in the auditorium almost every seat was taken! The concert occurred so that parents see how much their child has improved since the Orchestra Hauntcert. Family and friends of the orchestra students are all really looking forward to watching their child play again.
