Kindergarten

Probably the only full day I remember from Kinder is the first day.
I remember stepping on the hot, smelly, stuffy bus with my 9 year old brother, who ran down the seats to meet with his friends who he’d missed over the summer.
I didn’t have anywhere to sit and I didn’t know anyone, so I just hopped into an already occupied seat with two 3rd graders.

“Go away!” They told me, nearly shoving me off the stupid seat. “Find somewhere else to sit!”

Then the bus driver yelled at me to hurry up, so I just sat down quickly on another occupied bench.

When the bus finally got to school, my brother escorted me to my kindergarten classroom, where it was COMPLETE CHAOS.

There was paper and brand new school supplies being flung around everywhere!

All the kids were running around and the parents that had brought their kids were trying to control them but they couldn’t. It was so ridiculously crazy that it maybe took them 10 minutes to get all us kids rounded up, the supplies cleaned up, and the parents escorted out the door.

The teacher gave us our seats, and we all played a “Get to Know You” game.

“Now, boys and girls…” Our teacher said. “…We’re going to go to lunch, and while we’re in the cafeteria, I want you all to be on your very BEST behavior, all right?”

“Ok, Mrs.” We all said, as we walked in a not-so-straight line to the cafeteria.

In the cafeteria, I just sat down next to some other kids from my class. The lunch tables were so crowded that I couldn’t even move my elbows. But that was ok. The line for the food was too long to get lunch anyway.

At first, the cafeteria was sorta quiet, but that was because everybody was eating, but then gradually as people finished, the room got louder and louder until it got into an all out roar.

The teachers that patrolled the lunch room would threaten us and complain every once in a while.

“This is outrageous!”

“My ears hurt!”

“If this noise goes on any longer there will be assigned seating for the rest of the year!”

They hardly made a dent in the volume, so the teachers ended lunch early and just shoved us outside for recess.

All the kindergartners got so rowdy that some kids got hurt, and one kid even broke his elbow. The teachers had to call an ambulance, and the poor kid’s first school day ever ended in a hospital.

Then the teachers (and now a police officer) led us around the school to introduce us to bathrooms, water fountains, classrooms, and the principal’s office. The kids quieted down for a bit, and took a break from giving the teachers hell.

Next came nap time.

Back in the classroom, we were each shown to our own nap mat which had our names on it. We were supposed to lie down for an hour and sleep.

Key words: SUPPOSED TO

Nap time turned into insane time.

ALL THE PEOPLE just started leaping over others, rolling around on the mats, and some kids even rolled up a couple mats and threw them at the teacher.

The kindergartners got so out of hand that we were just herded into the cafeteria and were forced to sit silently for two hours before we went home.

Man, I miss kindergarten.
