Food for the S.O.L.

That’s ‘sustainable’, ‘organic’ and ‘local’ to you.

On the outskirts of downtown, and sitting comfortably next to a car wash, resides the wonderfully different restaurant by the name of The Cove. The Cove may be the kind of place you want to keep all to yourself, but with the amount of awards they have won, you might find this to be quite an exhausting task. Their awards range from “Best Eclectic Dining,” to “The Funkiest Place In America,” and then back to food with “Best Lamb Burger Ever” and “Best Vegetarian.”

The Cove has the kind of atmosphere that can only be described as perfectly flawed. With a large outdoor seating area that faces the neighboring car wash and a back-patio that has a ping pong table and a place for the kids, it is nothing short of inviting.

The Cove is known for their fish tacos; just look at their sign to see why. Even though they seem traditional at first glance, they are anything but what you’d find at home. The first taste is fresh- tortilla, fish, crunchy veggies. Then, you really start to understand what’s going on. You get the flavor from the sauce, and the heat from the spices on the fish. Bite after bite, it only gets better. But, suddenly, the bites start to get smaller and smaller as you hang onto what you have left. Then, you realize; eating these tacos isn’t just having a meal. It’s an experience.

Don’t leave The Cove after having inhaled only their fish tacos; you will be satisfied, but you will be missing out. One thing you must, must, must have before scuttling on home is the Organic Jalapeno Carrot Cake. Yes, I know. The name is questionable, but the dessert is delicious nonetheless. The cake is perfectly dense, admirably moist, and is topped with the best lemon icing I’ve ever had (sorry, Grandma).

The Cove caters to all eaters. I mean, where else are you going to find a Vegan Burger and a Bison Burger in the same building? The staff consists of both vegans and vegetarians. For those of you who aren’t familiar with PETA classifications, the difference between the two is that vegetarians don’t eat meat, but they do eat dairy. Vegans eat neither; no meat, no dairy, nothing that can be traced back to an animal.

In addition to serving up delicious food, The Cove proves to be a place of excitement and attraction. Diners can enjoy live music Tuesday through Saturday, and different events are held every Thursday.

If you only remember one thing, let it be their motto: Eat well, live well.
