After an amazing first season, Daredevil returns to Netflix. This time we also get new characters – The Punisher and Elektra, but one of them works better than the other.
First, let’s start with the positives. The camera work and fight scenes are fantastic. Episode three has a stairway fight in particular that is all one shot, and it was jaw-dropping to watch. The dark atmosphere established in season one is great in here as well. I really bought into the dangerous streets of Hell’s Kitchen. Charlie Cox was once again a good Daredevil, but the standout performance was given by Jon Bernthal as The Punisher. He is absolutely phenomenal in the role. He is very brutal, but you can also see that he still feels the pain of losing his family. The Punisher was by far the most intriguing part of the show for me, and I really enjoyed the moral fight that he and Daredevil have near the beginning of the season.
Now essentially this season has two story lines. One is about The Punisher, and the other involves Elektra and The Hand (an evil organization). I really didn’t care about anything involving The Hand. Every time the show cut to Elektra and that storyline, I just wanted them to go back to The Punisher. Another thing that I thought was really lacking was a true, threatening villain. In the first season we were introduced to Wilson Fisk, an extremely menacing character. You could also see the humanity behind him which made him a compelling villain. In this season we get the one-dimensional group of bad ninjas.
Season two was a really fun time to watch, but now I want a Punisher TV show more than I want a third season for the title character. Nevertheless, Daredevil season two is a solid and violent superhero show.
