Summer Movie Preview

by Cameron Tejeda | staff writer

Summer is finally here. It’s a time to unwind and forget about school. And what’s the perfect way to relax? Go to the theater and get lost in a movie. Here’s a preview for some of the notable films being released this summer.

June 10- The Conjuring 2

James Wan is back to direct the sequel to The Conjuring, so we can expect something terrifying. I’m a huge fan of the first movie. It was actually creepy and suspenseful, unlike most horror films being released now. The Conjuring 2 will continue to tell the story of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, played by great actors Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga. The movie will be based on the true events surrounding the Enfield Poltergeist. If you’re looking for a good scare, this should be the movie you see this summer. June 17- Finding Dory

We finally get a sequel to the beloved Finding Nemo. This time Dory sets off to find her family with the help of Nemo and Marlin. This is another animated film from Pixar, the studio behind the Toy Story movies, Monsters Inc, Finding Nemo, and The Incredibles. The bar is set high, so we will see if the movie can live up to the expectations. Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JhvrQeY3doI

June 24- Independence Day: Resurgence

The first Independence Day is a cheesy and fun action movie about aliens invading Earth. Now they attack once more, and we get a sequel. Although Will Smith is not returning from the original, Jeff Goldblum is on board. So as long as they can make another fun action movie, fans should be happy. July 1- The BFG

Anytime Steven Spielberg makes a film, it calls for some attention, and this time is no different. The BFG is a Disney movie about a 10 year old who befriends a giant. With the talent that is Spielberg’s directing, we should get a good family movie. Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZ0Bey4YUGI

July 1- The Purge: Election Year

The Purge franchise isn’t the best, as I didn’t like the first Purge movie at all. However the second one, The Purge: Anarchy, was enjoyable for me. While it wasn’t a good movie, it had some gorey action that I liked. The plot is about a night in the United States where all crime is legal for one night. You have to admit the concept is pretty interesting. This new one is about a senator who is against The Purge, and gets targeted on the night because of it. If you want some gore, maybe check this movie out. Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXMp9fBomJw

July 15- Ghostbusters

I love the original Ghostbusters from the 80’s, so I am very sceptical about this movie. This time around we have an all-female Ghostbusters team that could be funny, but the trailers haven’t sold me just yet. The comedy just doesn’t work for me. I don’t think it will be great, but I will watch it regardless. Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3ugHP-yZXw

July 22- Star Trek Beyond

Justin Lin, director of a few of the Fast and Furious movies, now takes on Star Trek. It definitely seems to be more action-oriented than sci-fi, but the cast is definitely still great. Chris Pine, Simon Pegg, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana all return from the previous movies, and Idris Elba will play the villain. Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRVD32rnzOw

July 29- Jason Bourne

Matt Damon returns for the next addition to the Bourne franchise. I really liked the first three movies that Damon was a part of, so I hope this one will be good as well. Paul Greengrass will direct, and I am certainly looking forward to this action spy movie. Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4gJsKZvqE4

August 5- Suicide Squad

DC brings some of their best characters together for this movie. Among the standouts are Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jared Leto as Joker, and Will Smith as Deadshot. Ben Affleck’s Batman will also be a part of the film. Suicide Squad is basically about a bunch of villains being forced on a team that supports the government. I am super excited to see what DC has up their sleeve. Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CmRih_VtVAs
