San Antonio’s hidden international grocery stores

Lauren Loveless | staff writer

San Antonio is known for its’ diversity and various cultures, and with that comes many different regional stores hidden in the corners of the city. From Japanese to European, you can basically find any type of global grocery store, as long as you’re willing to travel a bit of distance.

Review for Minnano Japanese Grocery: If you’re willing to travel some distance to get to Minnanos, you won’t be disappointed. Almost all of the goods they sell are imported from Japan, which includes a variety of cultural foods and products; it’s the perfect store for lovers of Japan and native speakers. However, because the products are imported, they are a bit pricey. But all in all, the cost is appropriate for the quality of the goods. This interior of the store is organized, albeit a bit crowded, but overall very easy to explore. The customer service is lovely and the workers even greet you politely as you enter in their native tongue.

Review for Sasha’s European Market: This store is a bit far as well, as it’s in the same shopping area as Minnanos. However, it’s definitely worth the visit if you love European sweets and goods; most of the products are Eastern European and Russian. The customer service is excellent and the selection is vast; the pricing isn’t horrible either. In the front of the store, they even sell European medicine and cultural trinkets. The store is overall very organized and pleasant to look at; the aisles aren’t crowded either.

Review for Vietnam Market: This store is much larger than the rest on the list and has a vast selection of produce. Near the back of the store, there is a large fish market and near the front, there’s classic house items found in Vietnamese homes. However, the down fall for this store is its’ exposed stash of boxes and unopened items near the left of the store. The right side of the store is well organized, however, the left side takes a bit away from that and is not aesthetically pleasing. Overall, however, the store is culturally appropriate and quite popular among shoppers.

Review for Evans Groceries: Regarding Indian goods, this is one of the best places to shop for authentic items. They have a meat market and produce section near the back of the store, which features traditional Indian-Pakistani goods. However, the inside of the store is a bit unorganized and cluttered, as there’s boxes spread throughout the store and tall narrow aisles. But if you can get over that fact and appreciate the well priced products and friendly staff, you won’t be disappointed.
