The Varsity and Junior Varsity basketball teams both have new coaches this 2010-11 season.
Seniors Chris Canedo, Joey Chapa, Rudy DeLeon, Jeremy McCracken, Partick Ybarra, and junior Joe Uribe are returning varsity players on the team as the team is under the new administration of Coach Norman Galyon as the Varsity Vols team’s coach. The boys ended the pre-season with 12 victories to 10 losses for their overall record, with a slow start of 0 wins to 3 losses in their district record, but have competed with heart and still expect to be in the hunt for a playoff spot by the end of the season.
During the pre-season, the team placed in 3rd at the San Antonio Christian Tournament, went 3 wins to 2 losses at the South San Tournament, and had 1 win to 2 losses at the Hays Tournament. Highlights earlier during the basketball season include victories over Brennan (ranking 23rd in the state ate the time), twice over Southwest, twice over Jefferson, a victory over Edison, and scored 88 point as their highest scoring this season with their victory over Smithson Valley. Leading scorers among the players are senior Greg Monday and Joe Uribe, with seniors Jeremy McCracken and Jose Chapa leading in rebound.
“We’re excited about this team and are aiming to be playing our best basketball during district,” Coach Ryan Taplin said. “Captains are Juniors Greg Monday and Joe Uribe and Senior Jeremy McCracken.”

“We’re expecting our kids to play hard for 32 minutes every game,” said Coach Taplin. “We have been preaching the importance of “competing” every day, both in practices and in games and I think that will pay off in the long run. This is the toughest district in the city (maybe the state) but we expect to compete every night and make the playoffs this season. Our ultimate goal is a state championship and were going to work towards that goal every single day. We have a close-knit group of kids on this team, and they get along really well. I think they really want to win for each other and for this school. There is not one particular thing that they do or say to motivate each other. But they are constantly motivating each other all week, whether thats in a tough practice or a close game. Its during those times that the comradery really shows. As long as we stay together, good things will happen. We improve every game and I’m very proud of the way the boys have played and continue to get better. We have played in a lot of close games, and Im looking forward to that paying off in the 2nd half of district play.”
