This school year brings new tests (and new fun acronyms) for the freshman with the introduction of the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR).
It replaces the equally fun TAKS test (Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills). The transition doesn’t apply to students attending classes prior to the 2011-2012 school year.
What makes the STAAR test different is its focus on college readiness. The test now features such challenges as open-ended questions and additional essays. Students will also be required to not only pass each test at the end of each year, but all tests must equal to a total passing score.
