"Matched" by Allie Condie (www.wikipedia.org)
In the Society, officials decide.
Who you love. Where you work. When you die.
Set in a distopian universe where society controls your life, Matched, the first in a series, is now in paperback. Coming soon, the sequel, Crossed, continues the story of Cassia Reyes.
Where we last left off, back in Matched, Cassia was coming up on her Matching ceremony. She was chosen to marry her best friend Xander. However, when she takes her chip with the matching information home, she sees another boy, Ky. She meets the boy and begins to fall for him instead of Xander and problems ensue.
Will she play it safe and choose Xander? Or do what no one else has ever done and follow her heart wih Ky?
Written by Ally Condie, a former high school English teacher, the book is does contain vivid imagery, such as the description of Cassia’s bright green dress and the dystopian world the characters live in. Yet, the ending, hinting toward a sequel, feels rushed as if the author couldn’t finish fast enough.
At the same time, the author successfully weaves in the meaning of Dylan Thomas’s villanelle, Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night with the plot of the story. Personally, I’d recommend it and can’t wait for the sequel, out November 1.
