by Ben Rodriguez

The Deftones are returning to San Antonio!

After a year long break from the “Diamond Eyes” tour, the Tones kicked off a new tour for their upcoming album “Koi No Yokan” Sept. 22 at the Epicenter Festival in Irvine, California.

The tour will travel up to Washington and work its way down to San Antonio, 2 days after the release of “Koi No Yokan”, November 15. Deftones fans start saving for the month of November so you can get your hands on the new album and cool merch at the concert!

Tickets for the showing go on sale September 28 and will be held at the Sunken Garden Theater, located at 3875 North Saint Mary’s Street.

Opening for Deftones will be “Scars on Broadway” with frontman Daron Malakian (former System of a Down guitarist).

But, In case you die hard Deftones fans, like myself, cannot wait for to entire album to release November 13, The Deftones were generous enough to release a free download to their new track “Leathers” on their website. You can access the page through the link here and join their mailing list to get the latest news and tour dates.

For those who aren’t too familiar with the Deftones, they’re known for their distinct Aggressive/Melodic sounds being classified as “intensely unique”. In my personal iTunes they are classified under the genre “Deftones” because you honestly cannot but a title on their work. With “Koi No Yokan” (2012) as their 7th studio album to come, previous albums to hit the studio are “Adrenaline”(1994), “Around the Fur”(1997), “White Pony”(2000), “Deftones”(2003), “Saturday Night Wrist”(2007), and “Diamond Eyes”(2010).

My personal favorite album is “Around the Fur”, clashing the aggression and rawness of previous album “Adrenaline”, with new melodic sounds shown in tracks, “Be Quiet and Drive”, and “Mascara”, that are later exploited by lead singer Chino Moreno in albums, “White Pony” and “Diamond Eyes”.

Original bassist Chi Cheng, after a horrific car accident, remains in a semi-consious coma since 2007. If you would like to know more information, or donate money to the Cheng family, Click here.

Upon downloading the new track and listening to some of Chinos new work in side project, Crosses, I am quite excited to see what the new album has in store. AS Chino expressed in an interview with NME Magazine the album is, ”Not heavier or slower, but more dynamic, going towards several directions, it’s heavy but beautiful”. That seems like something to keep your ears out for.

Now remember, New album out November 13, and live show at Sunken Garden Theater, November 15. Hope to see you there!

Long live The Deftones!
