Legalization of Marijuana Passes in Two States

In a surprising move, the states of Colorado and Washington legalized Marijuana for recreational use on Nov. 6. The state has removed all penalties for personal possession and personal growth of marijuana.

The Federal Government still has the Controlled Substance Act, naming marijuana a Schedule I controlled substance. They failed to comment on what actions they may take at this time.

The new amendment will allow adults 21 and older to legally purchase one ounce of marijuana as soon as 2014.

According to CNN.com, Colorado’s governor John Hickenlooper released a statement saying that, “This will be a complicated process, but we intend to follow through. That said, federal law still says marijuana is an illegal drug so don’t break out the Cheetos or gold fish too quickly.”

Locally, some are considering the money aspect of the vote.

“I think it’s better for Colorado money-wise,” senior Johnny Hernandez said.
