Vols ride their defense; ground game to beat Huskies.
The Lee Volunteers used a balanced running game and a dominant defense to knock off the Holmes Huskies 44-13 on Saturday night at Gustafson Stadium.
The Vols improved to 2-0 on the season, while Holmes fell to 1-2.
The first quarter saw Holmes strike first as Husky Chris Sauceda scored a 47 yard touchdown to put Holmes up 6-0.
Wide receiver Chris Rasado followed up with a 35-yard touchdown pass from Freedom Salas; who threw 3 touchdowns on the game, to put LEE up 7-6.
Trailing 13-7 in the second quarter, Lee took over for good as Salas threw a 48-yard touchdown to Chris Rasado. That an an extra point by Nick Lopez put the Vols up 14-13.
After an interception by by Jose Martniez, Salas hit Rasado again for a 15 yard touchdown to put the Vols up 21-13 at halftime.
The second half would get very ugly, as Anthony Green scored a 1-yard touchdown on the opening drive to put LEE up 27-13 and kick off a 23-0 run.
The Huskies fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Patrick Seldum recovered for Lee. Two plays later, backup quarterback Nick Lucko threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to put the Vols up 34-13.
Lee heads to Southwest High School next week to take on Southwest while the Huskies visit Jay.
