As the first debate occurs, here are some of the issues and where the candidates say they stand.

Defend and expand the Affordable Care Act, which covers 20 million people

Expand access to affordable health care to families regardless of immigration status

Defend access to reproductive health care.

Every American deserves access to high quality, affordable health care, not just insurance. Obamacare has failed on cost and quality of health care. It must be repealed. America needs a patient-centered health care system, allowing families and their doctors to be primary decision makers. Provide for the sale of health insurance across state lines.

  • “I believe weapons of war have no place on our streets. We may have our disagreements on gun safety regulations, but we should all be able to agree on a few things.”
  • “If you’re too dangerous to get on a plane, you’re too dangerous to buy a gun in America.”

  • “Law enforcement is great, they do a tremendous job, but they can’t be everywhere all of the time. Our personal protections is ultimately up to us.”

Make pre-school universal to 4 year-olds.

The U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling on marriage equality represents America at its best: just, fair and moving toward equality. Now we have more work to do. I’ll fight to ensure lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Americans have full equality under the law, and to end discrimination in employment, housing, schools, and other aspects of our society.

  • “that we are a nation of immigrants, and we treat those who come to our country with dignity and respect – and that we embrace immigrants, not denigrate them”
  • do everything possible under the law to protect families.
  • enforces immigration laws humanely
  • support immigrant integrations

  • Believes we are the only country that puts other nations before us and that it needs to change.
  • A nation without borders is not a nation
  • a nation without laws is not a nation
  • its nations that does not serve its own citizens is not a nation

Hillary Clinton wants to take out Isis’s stronghold in Iraq and Syria, and work with allies to dismantle global terror network. Hillary Clinton also wants to stay allies with European countries and strengthen ties with Cuba, hold China accountable for climate change, human rights, and trade. And also stand up to Vladimir Putin, and creating a plan to combat terrorists.

Donald Trump wants to bring China to the chopping table by declaring it a currency manipulator. Trump also wants to protect american ingenuity and investment by forcing china to uphold intellectual property laws to stop their unfair and unlawful practice of forcing US to share it’s technologies with chinese competitors.

  • Fight for full federal equality for LGBT Americans.
  • Support LGBT youth, parents, and elders.
  • Protect transgender rights.
  • Promote human rights of LGBT people around the world.

  • The Supreme Court has issued an opinion on this. Same-sex marriage is an issue that should have been decided by the states.
  • Supports Religious Freedom Act.

Roe V. Wade “is the touchstone of our reproductive freedom, the embodiment of our most fundamental rights, and no one – no judge, no governor, no Senator, no President – has the right to take it away.”

The primary responsibility of the federal government is to protect the rights of its citizens. Life is the most fundamental right. The federal government should not diminish this right by denying its’ protection. I am opposed to abortion except for rape, incest and life of the mother. I oppose the use of government funds to pay for abortions.

  • Protect wildlife in the United States by keeping public lands public—not auctioning them off to the highest bidder—and making more resources available to farmers, ranchers, and forest landowners who are taking steps to conserve our wildlife, lands, and waters.
  • Combat international wildlife trafficking by shutting down the U.S. market for illegal wildlife products and combating international animal trafficking and poaching, which harms the environment and fuels terrorist activity.
  • Protect pets and domesticated animals by making sure facilities like animal breeders, zoos, and research institutions create plans to protect the animals in their care during disasters; strengthening regulations of “puppy mills” and other harmful commercial breeding facilities; and supporting the Preventing Animal Cruelty and Torture (PACT) Act.
  • Protect farm animals from inhumane treatment by encouraging farms to raise animals humanely and working to eliminate the use of antibiotics in farm animals for non-therapeutic reasons.
  • Protect horses by ending the slaughter of horses for human consumption and cracking down on the practice of horse soring, in which chemicals or other inhumane methods are applied to horses’ limbs to exaggerate their gait.
