Get to Know Your Brahmas: Tokiko Powell

Ms. Tokiko Powell is the new Japanese teacher, and she is originally from Tokyo, Japan. This is her first year teaching Japanese here and she enjoys students taking her class and wanting to learn more about Japanese culture.

Q: Where are you from?

A: “Tokyo, Japan.”

Q: What made you move to San Antonio?

A: “Actually, my family moves a lot and my husband works for the Randolph Air Force Base so we ended up here.”

Q: Do you like it here, at MacArthur?

A: “I love it. The kids are good, they’re well behaved, at least in my class.”

Q: When was your birthday and how was it last celebrated?

A: “My birthday is February 27. I don’t remember how it was last celebrated, maybe I went out to eat as a family.”

Q: What is your favorite color and why?

A: “I like bright colors, just makes me happy, but it seems like I wear a lot of dark colors. I don’t know why but I like bright colors.”

Q: What are some of your hobbies?

A: “I like to do gardening, I love flowers, unfortunately Texas is too hot for the flowers so you have to give them a lot of water. Also my other hobby is windsurfing.”

Q: Do you have a favorite TV show and if so why is it your favorite?

A: “I don’t actually watch TV, which is so sad to say, I am so busy in daily life. I am a mom as well, I have two children and they keep me very, very busy.”

Q: Do you have any pets in your household?

A: “Yes, a dog and her name is Locket, my other child and my shadow. I wish she can talk so we can communicate more but she understands my commands, she listens to me more than my kids.”

Q: Do you talk to your dog in Japanese or in English?

A: “Both…maybe. She is bilingual, she understands both languages.”

Q: Do your kids know both languages?

A: “Yes.”

Q: If you had a superpower what would it be and why?

A:  “I’d probably be invisible because its fun to sneak around and see what everyone is doing.”

Q: Are you more a high-five person or a hugger?

A: “I’m both, depending on the situation.”

Q: Do you have a favorite snack or meal you like to eat?

A: “Well I love to cook, my kids love my cooking so their favorite meal that I cook is my Korean rice.”
