Hawaii Missile Crisis

The state of Hawaii went into a mass panic on Jan. 13, the state officials were planning on sending out a message about a ballistic missile drill  but instead they ‘hit’ the wrong button.

Emergency Alert : BALLISTIC MISSILE THREAT INBOUND TO HAWAII. SEEK IMMEDIATE SHELTER. THIS IS NOT A DRILL.

This was the message that was sent out to everybody in Hawaii.

Tensions between United States and North Korea have been high lately due to North Korea developing new technologies like nuclear warheads. North Korea is 4,661 miles from Hawaii. This is why the State of Hawaii went into panic mode. According to officials North Korea has launched more than 27 missiles in 2017. One of the missiles landed in Japan’s exclusive economic zone.

Now they call for new procedures due to this. The state of Hawaii claims that there are two versions of the drills. One being ‘DRILL-PACOM (CDW)-State only.’ But they clicked on ‘PACOM(CDW)-State only.’

The Governor of Hawaii David Ige was told about the false alarm two minutes after it was sent out to the public. Later on Ige would tell reporters that he couldn’t correct the false alarm because he did not know his Twitter password.

Hawaii’s Emergency Management Agency, the people in charge of warning system repeatedly called the situation unacceptable.
