Golf Season Off To A Booming Start

By Makala Finley

Reagan and Churchill are two of the area’s top contenders in golf, and its a spot they’re quite used to. On Monday, that all changed when senior Kevin Campbell stepped up and took his game to a whole new level. Campbell brought home a first place win at the  junior varsity’s first tournament on a course that the team had never competed on.  With this win, Campbell has earned a new spot on the varsity team, and in turn has gained more confidence to carry throughout the year.

” I think this win helped his confidence because his play has been erratic. His score should propel him onto varsity for the rest of the year,” Varsity and JV golf coach Lyn McDonald said.

Gaining a win is a major confidence booster, and a great way to set off on a stupendous season. Though confident, Campbell is not conceited.

“It boosted my confidence, yes. I’m going to continue to go in with an open-mind, don’t be over-confident. I’ll stay focused. It’s going to show my coach that I’m dedicated, and I’m going to work hard to keep my spot on varsity,” Campbell said.

Though focus is on Campbell’s win, the rest of both the girl’s and boy’s has a great foundation. The junior varsity and varsity golf teams consists of about 18 students, most of which are upperclassmen. The season has just started, and throughout the year the JV team will compete in 4 tournaments and the varsity team will compete in eight. With a strong team, Coach McDonald has high expectations for the season.

“We have several seniors on the team with a great deal of experience, so we anticipate to compete for districts,” McDonald said. ” We also have some really good girl golfers and they should be competing for districts as well.”

The next JV tournament is Nov. 1 and the next Varsity tournament is next Friday and Saturday.
