New Album: MGMT

An enigma wrapped in an enigma-MGMT’s new self-titled album is of it’s own kind of beautiful sound. Not quite the slap of disillusionment, but more like being captivated by the intricate sound of MGMT. Basically, if you’re expecting them to come out with another album like “Oracular Spectacular”, you will be sadly mistaken and the band would probably ask you to leave the room.

MGMT’s 3rd album since Oracular Spectacular (2007) with top singles: Kids, Electric Feel and Time to Pretend, is less of the familiar “electric feel” high school jam and more of the mature sounding college kids. Their sophomore album, “Congratulations” however, has made a segway to their newest album by slowly abandoning their friendly pop mechanics easing into their more abstract style. The new album has stepped away from their safe techno beats entirely, letting go and falling into deep experimental freedom. Top new single “Your Life Is A Lie” practically boards the band onto a one way ship to their own psychedelic planet, separating them from other mainstream indie bands. Behind the upbeat tempo and happy melodies, MGMT questions purpose, fate and mortality and reaches a deeper philosophical understanding of music.

Due to their new sound, the band seems more like they’re truly enjoying what they’re doing with their new music and less like they care about how much money they make; instead of pandering to their audience who are looking for more songs like “Kids” they’ve decided to make more of their own music.
