The sounds of pads hitting other pads and the crowd cheering with every score fill every stadium that Madison plays at, especially those that hold the playoff games. Every game is an emotional roller-coaster for the team and the student body as a whole.
Madison entered the post-season with high hopes of breaking the streak of being knocked out of the playoffs. And so far, those hopes have held out as the Mavericks get set to play their fifth game.
The first game, under the bright lights of Heroes Stadium, resulted in a 63-10 victory over New Braunfels that provided hope among the students and players alike of advancing further into the playoffs.
Following said game, Madison’s second victory came from the 49-20 win over O’Connor in the once “cursed” Alamodome. The student body became ecstatic as the streak of losses in the dome finally ended.
The third game, held at Buccaneer Stadium in Corpus Christi against Sharyland, brought the total number of playoff wins up by one with a score of 45-21. This victory brought yet another chance to advance Madison further toward state.
Facing the Judson Rockets, the fourth playoff game guaranteed a fight on both sides of the ball, and a close, yet action-packed, game. Perseverance and determination ultimately led to the 33-29 victory, which ended with the Maverick defense getting a goal-line stop.
Even though Madison fought hard, the state finals just weren’t meant to be this year. Madison came very far in the playoffs, but ultimately lost to Pearland in Waco. Not going out without a fight, Madison managed to make the score 38-34.
While the Maverick’s season is now over, the student body still provides support for the players and their team as they prepare for the next season. Many fans flocked to Twitter after the semi-final game to voice their immediate support for the team and all of their hard work.
