Fresh off a loss against MacArthur, the Mavs were preparing to face Judson. a team that they faced earlier in the season. The team was looking to making a run deep into the playoffs before the game on Friday night.

“We should do great we don’t have a very hard bracket and we [could] go [to] state,” senior Andre Wiggins said.

With high hopes going into the game the Mavs were hoping to repeat the outcome of their first game against Judson, but Judson wasn’t going to let that happen. The Rockets came out, and proved that they weren’t to be taken lightly in playoffs.

Judson had a commanding lead most of the game, with the score of 17-3 going into the half. The Mavs weren’t going out without a fight though, and had a late charge. Late in the third quarter the Mavs scored making it 24-17, and at kick off the team recovered the ball. Even with the fumble from Judson the team was unable to capitalize on the mistake, and the game ended with a 24-17 season ending loss for the team.

“I felt kind of cheated,” senior Tyler Garcia said. “I feel that we could have won that game, but it just didn’t turn out that way.”

The loss was taken hard by all players, but none more than seniors whose high school football careers were over.

“Well everyone took it hard, but it was hard for me being a senior, this will be probably be the last I play,” Garcia added. “It’s just real sad because four years of hard work, all were lost right there.”

Mavs Start Their March Into Playoffs

Every game of the season has helped decide the Mavs’ position in playoffs, and now they stand at game one of the playoffs preparing to play Judson.

The Mavs faced off against the Rockets early in the season and walked away with a 45-28 win.

“It lets us know that they can be beat,” senior center Jake Jauert said, “and we know [Judson] won’t just let us have it, we still have to work for it.”

The Judson Rockets (6-4) have made their way into the playoffs and are a win away from taking the Mavs out of the playoffs. With each game being win or go home, anything is possible. Even though a loss will take them out of the playoffs the Mavs are hoping to keep their playoff hopes alive.

“We are very hyped,” senior linebacker Andre Wiggins said. “Seniors aren’t planning to go home yet; we are playing for a championship.”

With the game being the first in district this game will add some experience to the victor of the game, and could give them a taste of the competition they can expect to have. With the Mavs going into the game the experience of past year’s playoffs give them the edge, and may help them march into state.

“The way our bracket is set up we are as good or better than most [teams],” Jauert said. “We can at least make it to semis if we try.”

The hype for the M&M bowl was at record levels this year, as the teams were playing for the district championship. With MacArthur winning last year, students, teachers, and administration, were all hoping to bring bragging rights home along with the win. Unfortunately the team walked away with a 49-24 loss.

Mac went out and scored 28 unanswered points right away, until the third quarter when the Mavs scored their first points, on a 6-yard Aaron Green touchdown to make it 28-7. The Mavs made a run in the second half by cutting down Mac’s lead to 11 points, with a score of 35-24 at one time, but left empty handed with their second loss in district.

M&M Bowl: Annual Tradition

The M&M bowl is one of the most-heated rivalries in the NEISD, and rightfully so.

Between last year’s game against MacArthur being a nail-biting loss 34-30 for the Mavs, and this year’s chance to play for first in district, the game couldn’t be more hyped. The game is meaningful for both teams this year as MacArthur is hoping to gain their first district title since 2000.

Cross Country Heads To Regionals

Sweat pouring down runner’s faces, hearts pounding, tense legs and the finish line in sight. The cross country team has accomplished something great again, for the second year in a row the girl’s cross contry team will be heading to regionals tomorrow; the final stretch to the state championship. Head Coach Kayla Cross has been coaching at Madison for 13 years, and the team has headed to regionals three times. The girl’s team consists of seven girls: one sophomore, four juniors and two seniors. The team has the same expectation for next year’s season; making it to regionals once again.

“We’re hoping to start a tradition of [going to] regionals,” Cross said.

The team has had a strong season. At the Southwest meet they were 3rd, the Northeast meet they were 2nd, they were 4th at the Seguin meet, 2nd in the NISD meet and they ended up 3rd in districts. Also, this year was the first time in 13 years that the girls won the SAISD meet. The team has high expectations for the regional meet, they’d like to beat all of the teams in district and end up in the top three to head to state. This has been the team’s goal all year.

“I’m excited[about regionals] I don’t want to jinx it, but I know that our cross country girls are capable of kicking some serious tush,” senior runner Octavia Pinckney said. ” We have our eyes on state.”

No matter what the girl’s cross country team follows the motto, “No excuses, no regrets,” and they are keeping an open mind as they head to regionals.

The regional meet is this Saturday, Nov 6, at the Brook City base. The girls are scheduled to run at 11:20.

Freshman Football Overcomes Tragedy

Photo and Story by Juan Garcia | Staggering and dizzy, starting quarterback Tyler Mangold got back up from a sack and tried to finish the game. With only one quarter left, he finished the game as a leader, but later a doctor diagnosed him with a concussion that would end his football season early. The freshman A team was lost and did not know who to turn to. However, from beneath the smoke arose Byron Daniels, a quarterback with the experience that would lead the team to their first district win.

“With the loss of Tyler Mangold to a concussion in the Reagan game we thought that Byron could continue running our offense effectively,” freshman offensive coach Jacob Raley said. “Byron is athletic and has a good arm; he can play a multiple of positions on the field for us. He was quarterback in middle school so it was an easy switch.”

Daniels started against the Lee Volunteers and came out strong throwing one touchdown pass, and rushing for another. The defense did not get out-shined by the offense though because they also had key players that contributed to their first district win. Felipe Garcia had an interception, which led to a touchdown. Curtis Reese, Darius Ainsworth, and Eliezer Ortiz had key defensive plays that led them to victory.

“The cooperation between the offense and defense led us to victory,” defensive end Curtis Reese said. “Our defense was stopping the run and I’m glad we won.”

Before the injury, Daniels played running back and was unaware he was going to be quarterback. Mangold’s replacement was not very clear to the team, but after seeing Daniels practice, his teammates were positive he was a good replacement.

“I was truly sad for [Mangold],” running back Joshua Meno said. “But after seeing Byron throw the first pass, I knew he was the one.”

Daniels looks to take advantage of the opportunity and make the best of the 1-4 freshman district record. Daniels will start against the Brahmas and hopes that the team cooperates to bring their district record to 2-4.

“[As quarterback], I am showing the coaches that I am a good quarterback,” Daniels said. “I listen to my coach and do my job as a quarterback.”

The freshman A team is set to play at MacArthur this Thursday at 5:30.

Mavs Plunge Ahead In Districts

The Mavs ran out to an early lead Saturday against Lee. The team had a commanding 35-0 lead early in the second quarter and put it in cruise soon after.

“At the beginning we played good but we had one shaky drive,” senior A.J Myers said. “Other than that we did better than we did in practice.”

After the first half the team had put on bench players, and still walked away with another win in district under their belts. The game ended with a score of 51-14. The Mavs (7-2), (4-2) in district, will have the chance to play MacArthur in a game that will determine who will walk away with first in district.

“The best part was just coming out with the win and having the chance to play MacArthur for district,” Myers said.

The next game against MacArthur, otherwise known as the M&M bowl, will be held at 7:30 Friday at Heroes stadium.

Green Chooses Nebraska

Senior Aaron Green has made many choices in his life, but arguably none bigger than his announcement about where he will go to play college football.

Green decided to make his announcement at his church Maranatha Bible church, just to “do it his way.” Where Green was surrounded by friends, family, coaches, and even former NFL great Priest Holmes. It was his day. A day that ended with him uttering the words everyone has been waiting for, “Today I decided to go to the University of Nebraska.”

Green knew what he was looking for in his college experience and must have found it at the University of Nebraska. His brother Andrew also happens to go to the University of Nebraska, but that didn’t affect his decision.

“I picked [Nebraska], because I can grow, and I want to come out and say that I’m a better man.” Green said, “I can’t go to college just because my brother goes there I had to go to the college that fits me best.”

Aaron Green will be joining a football team coached by Bo Pelini, with players such as freshman quarterback Taylor Martinez and sophomore running back Rex Burkhead.

“I feel good, I’m confident and comfortable about my pick right now,” Green said.

Even though Green’s senior season is approaching the end, the team still has two more regular season games; one against Lee this Saturday, and the other against MacArthur next week.

“It was just fun,” Green said, “It’s funner than any other level of football and I will never get this time back.”

Mavs Inch Closer To A Playoff Spot

After coming off a loss against the Judson Rockets last week, the last thing that anyone wanted the Mavs to do was to lose against the Reagan Rattlers.
The Mavs didn’t disappoint. They came out on Friday night and won their third game in distrcit, with the game concluding in a 36-28 victory for the team.
“We came out and played as a team and left with the win, and as long as we work as a team we will make it far into the playoffs,” senior Chris Graf said.
The win brought the Mavs to a 3-1 record in district with this week’s game being against Lee. If the Mavs win Saturday, they will have won their fourth district game which could allow the team to clinch a playoff spot.
“I think [making playoffs] is a great opportunity and we completely deserve it,” senior Jasper Pearson said.”We can show to everyone that we can overcome are losses and come out on top.”
The game against Lee will be held on Saturday Oct.30 at Comalander Stadium.
