Hanukkah: A Celebration of Light

Most Jewish people do not celebrate Christmas, because it’s an Christan holiday. During the winter season, Jewish people celebrate Hanukkah. Hanukkah is the festival that is observed by lighting candles on a special  candelabrum with nine branches.  It is called a menorah.

Other Hanukkah festivities include playing dreidel and eating oil-based foods such as latkes and sufganiyot, and dairy foods.  Latkes are deep fried potatoe shavings.  Sufganiyot are jelly filled deep fried pastries.

Hanukkah starts on the the 25 of Kislev on the Hebrew calendar and lasts for 8 days. This year it falls between December the 2nd and December the 10th.

On the eight days, practicing Jews say specific prayers depending on the day. A candle is lit at this time and remains buring until it burns our.    After the candle lighting and prayer, traditional food is eaten. In some houses they give a present on each of the 12 days.

Hanukkah is celebrated with friends and family, not only eating and worshipping, but also playing.  The Jewish people play a game called Dreidel.  You may click on this link to find out how to play, https://youtu.be/w6yTapEcJYQ.

Blue is the traditional color for decorations during Hanukkh paired with a gold Hankukia (menorah), but the degree and type of decoration is largely a matter of personal preference.

HAPPY HANUKKAH TO ALL!

Shalom
