Winter in the North

Emilie Villegas

All of you have probably heard of that meme. The one where scientists warn about global warming, then someone comes back with a smart reply. Usually it’s, “ but It’s cold outside”. Well they’re right, it is cold outside. At least up North. Global warming is a serious matter. Especially when the North Pole is melting.

You heard right. You may not think that the ice caps melting is such a big issue but, let’s take a look at the temperature in the air. Just last year the North Pole astounded scientist all over by reaching freezing and melting point. The highest temperature is 13 degrees celsius, hotter than the South Pole. Last year it had reached 2 degrees celsius. 30 degrees above average temperature. This was due to a heat blast through the wind, crossing over the pole.

“It was just one time,” you may be thinking. However, this has happened since 1980. With each one becoming more common, becoming more intense, and lasting longer. As the sea ice melts, this leaves the ice vulnerable to these wind storms. Pushing the ice up North and releasing heat from the ocean into the atmosphere. Scientists have also found an open state of water. They were shocked for this water was supposed to be layered in a thick sheet of ice. Many of these events are due to the air. The open sea, which releases this heat, adding to the heat that’s already in the air. Surging winds cross the Greenland Sea, raising the temperature. Slowly melting what we know as our North Pole.

Global warming isn’t such a joke anymore, is it? There’s actual evidence and proof that the pole are slowly shrinking away. Although it is not as present as you think it should be, it’s slowly changing our climate. If you haven’t noticed, during the summer check the temperature. You can probably see that it’s way hotter than the previous summers. If not, don’t worry. You’ll feel it soon.

Even if it’s still a joke to you, please consider keeping it in the back of your mind. So when that time comes, you’ll know, that this isn’t a joke anymore.
