Binge Eating Disorder

BED or Binge Eating Disorder is a disorder where one consumes unreasonably large amounts a food in one sitting. BED can be caused not just by underlying diseases. Some people may confuse bulimia with BED. With BED you don’t try to rid yourself of extra calories eaten. Someone with BED may diet and eat normal meals, but that can lead to more binge eating. There are different severities to BED. They are determined by how many episodes of binge eating there are in one week.

You are more likely to get this disorder if your parents or a sibling have had an eating disorder. A lot of people with BED have a history of dieting. Dieting or not eating during the day may trigger an urge to binge eat, especially if you have depression.

Many people who have BED feel negatively about themselves and their skills and accomplishments. Some triggers for bingeing may include stress or poor body self-image. Psychiatric disorders that are sometimes linked with BED are depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, and substance use disorders.

A person with binge-eating disorder can become really good at hiding behavior, which can make it hard for others to detect the problem. If you suspect a loved one you think may have symptoms of BED, have an open and honest discussion about your concerns for them. Provide encouragement and support. You can offer to help your loved one find a qualified medical care provider or mental health professional. Don’t make them feel bad.

The causes of BED are not known yet. But genetics, biological factors, long-term dieting and psychological issues can increase the risk of Binge Eating Disorder.

You are not alone in this.
