Quinceanera
Quinceanera is the Spanish word for a girl/boy who is 15 years old. Quinceanera also is the name given to the coming-to-age celebration on a girl’s 15th birthday. It is also for boys, not just for girls. The Quince has many traditions which include:
- Receiving a church blessing .
- Having 14 male and female escorts, in spanish its called damas and chambelanes, they represent the previous 14 years of life.
- Present a porcelain doll to a young sister symbolizing leaving childhood behind
- Changing from flats to high heels shoes to represent a young woman
- Dancing the first dance with her father
This age-old tradition, with only minor modern additions, connects Hispanic girls and boys to their culture and their past.
