“My cousin was very naive and I guess raised by people who didn’t understand the fundamentals of culture in America. When she went to my tae kwon do competition she saw a girl who was white and she saw me talking to that girl and asked, “Why is he talking to that white girl?” From that day it just kind of changed my outlook on race, and how a lot of people are absent-minded when it comes to race and not respectful of people.” PHOTO BY B.MELENDEZ

“My baby brother impacted my life in a huge way. He is not fully my blood but even though he was conceived through my dads affair he brings joy in my life. Not being the youngest anymore gives me that chance to take care of someone. I don’t live with him because he is living in Mexico but I still want the best for him so that he can have a good future. Julia Dedick sits in the cafeteria before a long day of AP classes. “I try to further my education as much as I can, but I think that experience is worth more in a monetary sense than schooling, especially in engineering. I only know this cause that is the field I’m interested in. Although I’m into engineering, choir is my true passion and when i was accepted into chamber choir it was very rewarding to me. If I could follow my passion I would do something in singing, but engineering is definitely where the money is and is more realistic for me,” Dedick said. PHOTO BY B.MELENDEZ
