Checkmate! It’s Chess Club. Come join them for an afternoon packed with strategy, excitement and chess. Chess Club meets every Wed. afternoon in the library from 4:15 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Snacks and drinks are provided.
“I like Chess Club because it gives me time to hang out with my friends,” Mindy Villarreal, sophomore, said.
At Chess Club, members are challenged to work on their strategy and the skills of planning ahead. Chess is a great way to relieve stress and helps them build the needed skills to plan for a future and make a strategy to get there.
“I think that chess helps the students to learn to plan ahead and how to build a strategy,” Alex Weinberg, world ranked chess master, said.
Not only does chess teach you important life skills it can also win students a scholarship to college.
“I once had a student win a full ride scholarship when she was 14,” Weinberg, said.
The purpose of Chess Club is to help students prepare for later on in life. They do this by helping students improve their chess skills. At Chess Club students can get help by asking Weinberg or by practicing with a friend.
“I love playing chess and I love to learn the strategy,” Juniper Risk, sophomore, said.
So if any student wants to rev up their game or just want to learn how to play chess, Chess Club is open for anyone, so come to the meetings on Wed. afternoons.
