Treats for Sweets

Jessica Mullen’s face is blank, listening to Mr. G talk about the scientist Henry Cavendish and lecture on and on about gravity and forces. A student council deliverer/NHS deliverer comes in his face, extatic from all the excitment hat has trailed behind them. He calls out Mullen and hands them the valentine. Mullen is shy and hesitant at first but accepts it anyway, a thin smile spreads ear to ear, as her face grows red.

NHS (National Honor Society) and Student Council sold special delivery valentines to students who had girlfriends, boyfriends and even just good friends all around hte school whom they wanted to honor with a gift from Student Council or a card and Hershey’s kisses from NHS.

“Aww, my brothers so sweet,” Meghan Campano, freshmen, said as she opens the valentine to reveal who it was from. “I totally wasn’t expecting this.”

Valentines day was originally started in ancient Rome to honor their goddess Juno on Feb. 14. Then, when their emperor Claudius outlawed marriage, a priest named valentine continued to mary young couples anyway and was arrested for it. On the day he was suppose to die, Feb. 14, he wrote a note to his friend over the time he was in jail, (she was the one who kept Valentine’s spirits up) and he signed it “Love, your Valentine” since then both young and old have exchanged love notes and gifts.

However, though this holiday started in love, not all have that same feeling towards it.

“I hate valentines day because of how commercialized it is now, its stupid,” Nina Hudson, freshmen, said.

This may just be because thye don’t participate or think the day is only for couples, however not even the first note from Saint Valentine was between a couple, just friends.

“I received 3 or 4 valentine gifts. It wasnt from anyone too special. It was more of a joke between a bunch of my friends,” Adriana Lopez, junior, said.
