Junior Ayanna Atkins is the only returning regional-qualifying shotput and discus thrower this year.

Atkins, who turns 19 today, is  in varsity track. She started five years ago.

“I first started in middle school, and I have been in track since then,” said Atkins. “ I did  go to regional  last year; I placed third place. I was really excited and my coaches and teams felt proud about it.”

She placed first in discus and third in shotput at the North East Invitational Track meet, and first in shotput and second in discuss at the Northside Invitational Thursday.

“Ayanna does great work, if she works really hard enough she can go to regionals and state,” said Coach Phillips.

Atkins has also played varsity basketball for two years. At 6’2″, she is often the tallest player on the court.

“Ayanna has great attitude when it comes to any game,” said Coach Murphy.

“Her height makes it hard for the other teams to make a point and that gives us an advantage,” said coach Rheinberger.
