Track Athletes Head to Area

By Antonio Watson and Emarald Robinson | Courtesy Photos | Seven track athletes are headed to area this week following top 3 places at the district meet last week. Sophomore Vanessa Redix placed third in the high jump at 5’0″.

“My goal is to pass 5’4″ in regionals,” Redix said. “My biggest inspiration is my Dad and Coach Berger”

Junior Ayanna Atkins placed second in shot put and discus is headed to area for the second time.

“It felt great to place,” Atkins said. “I can’t wait to go to area. I really just want to break the school’s record in my last attempt of the year.”

Senior Will Porter placed third in long jump with a jump of 20’11”.

“My biggest inspiration  is God because He’s always been there for me, and He’s always on my side,” Porter said. “I consider placing as a memorable moment, my next goal is to make it to regionals and get place higher.”

Senior Chubaka Bahindwa placed third in the 1600-meter run with a time of 4:36.22.

” It felt good to take third in the 1600,” Bahindwa said “I ran smart and I would like to go to regionals.”

The boys from 4×2 took fourth place in the district track meet and will run area Thursday at 7 p.m. The team consists of Wilfred Porter, Kendall McCree, Roderick Owens, and Devin Mendez.

“We didn’t run as well as as we liked, so it was pretty cool to know that we still placed. We really want our track season to be longer than the baseball season this year,” Said junior Kendall McCree.

“Our biggest motivation is each other, we are constantly pushing each other because we don’t want to let each other down,” Said junior Devin Mendez
