Last week at Southside, a cold front arrived between the  races, and varsity had much warmer, more humid races than JV girls, and JV boys were rained out. Senior Kelly Kindla faced the heat in the first race, losing her shoe on course but still finishing the race as the first Roosevelt varsity girl finisher.

Coach Corey Bedell said sophomore Damien Mendoza is the top boy varsity runner. He has a personal record of 17:50 this year, which he attributes to his concentration during the race.

“Focusing on catching up being the best that I can, ”  Mendoza said.  “It’s really fun with everyone and its like a big happy family.”

This year in JV freshman Mitzi Miranda has placed in a number of her meets, coming in fifth at Southside last week .

“Miranda is the amazing freshman,” said Bedell. “I see great things in the future for her.”

Miranda started cross country two years ago when she was in 7th grade in middle school . She won two medals for first place and entered in a 5k .

” I feel like I can do anything,”  she also said “I love running because its a way to concentrate on myself and forget everything else.”

The team competes at the SAISD meet tomorrow and district at Roan Forrest Elementary Oct. 25.
