The varsity boys won their season opening game against New Braunfels, 55-41.

The team has a new coach this year and four returning players who started out by proving themselves to a team that beat them 60-65 last year.

“It won’t be a walk in the park, but we will get better everyday,” senior Kevin Edwards said.

New coach Manny Flores said he thinks of himself as a man of 57 kids, his two biological kids and his 55 basketball students.

“I invest a lot of time in the basketball program,” Flores said. “When people ask me how many kids I have I tell them that I have 57 kids. I spend more time in basketball than I do at home with my wife and kids.”

Flores, who came from El Paso, said he is up late every night trying to figure out how to connect with all 55 of his students.

It wasn’t just love of basketball that brought him to Roosevelt, it was his love of grass and trees.

“I love central Texas like grass and trees,” Flores said. “In El Paso it is desert and dust storms.”

The one thing he tries to teach his players is to love the journey, not the result.

The varsity team will play in the Northside tournament this weekend.
