Students use reduced fares to get around on Via

By Giovanni Deprizio |

The VIA bus is a common use for transportation, especially for some students who don’t have a car or any other way of getting around, it’s very convenient.

“Some days I get lucky and the bus is free since the coin machine would be broken,” junior Wendy Orozco said.

A regular bus fair is  $1.30 per ride, and a 31-day pass of unlimited rides is $38, or if you qualify for reduced fair, then it will be $19.

For students, the prices drop significantly if you get a reduced fair pass from your school, the bus fair is only 65 cents per ride. Via bus passes are issued by student signature through the AP office. Currently more than 200 passes have been issued this year.

Also if you’re in college, you can apply for a reduced bus fair by going to your local VIA bus station and bringing proof of current registration, school ID, tuition statement.

The spring pass is generally vaild January through May and Fall semester pass is valid August through January. Semester passes cannot be purchased online. The semester pass is ideal for those who ride the bus a lot and is convenient for students who need a ride.

Unlike taking a school bus the via bus you can run into anything.

“I enjoy taking the VIA bus since you’ll always see something odd like this one time I met a guy with a duck in a box,” senior Anna Rodriguez said.

Buses 8, 632, 630 run through Walzem, and the 8 line also runs down Ray Bon. Via schedules are available at www.viainfo.net and you can also text the bus stop number on any bus sign to 52020 to get a schedule of which bus arrives there when.  There is also the GoGoVia app for iphone or android.
