Instagram Introduces Stories

Snapchat, better known for allowing users to communicate using media such as pictures and film, viewable for up to 10 seconds, ran without competition for almost five years. The social media application which also allows users to post onto their story, now faces competition with Instagram.

Even the interface is similar in both services.

Last month, Instagram finally spiced things up by launching their own feature dubbed as ‘Instagram Stories,’ very similar to the concept of Snapchat.

The Instagram update, which was sent out in early August, quickly gained attention by the media. Soon, posts that called Instagram names such as “Insta Snap,” or “The New Snapchat,” filled the internet. Some users even went as far as saying that Instagram would get sued by Snapchat for stealing their ideas, however, nothing has been confirmed.

It’s obvious that in a world full of technology, it is all about competition to having the most popular applications to the public. In order to see which service offers the most features, here is a comparison to help determine which service should be crowned winner.

Both Snapchat and Instagram Stories offer a 24 hour view of stories. They also allow users to add text into media shared and allow upload of media from galleries. The two also have different types of filters, but unlike Snapchat’s filters which include the popular face swap and different kinds of dogs, its rival simply offers colorful ones.

With Snapchat, while you may have to download a separate application, the features received are more than those offered by the competition. On the other hand, with Stories, you have the ability to have a Snapchat-like service without having to leave Instagram app, since stories are integrated in the same place.

In the end, users are welcomed to keep both services. For those who use media for direct communication, both do offer some type of personal messaging. However for those who are willing to sacrifice some features that Snapchat offers, then Instagram Stories is the new Snapchat for these users.
