Signing up for the future

By Juan Villanueva |

It’s finally senior year, and some students can’t decide what to do after high school! Seniors are worrying that their parents might kick them out as soon as they graduate or turn 18, so they have to decide between three big options. These include college, military, and full-time employment careers.

College

Don’t forget to sign in, in the sign in area when visiting the College and Career Center

When students go to college after high school, odds are they can be more satisfied with what they’re doing long-term. If one wants to have a major career of anything, perhaps engineering or teaching, then college is right path.

Overall, colleges can be narrowed down to three different types. These include community or two year colleges like SAC, four year colleges like UTSA or Trade Schools like Quest College. Colleges are a great opportunity for students to boost their knowledge, while doing the things they enjoy.

“I’m nervous, but at the same time excited to get the hands on experience on doing something I like,” senior Jennifer Cuevas said.

Reminder: Remember to visit the Littleton Gym at the Blossom Athletic Center on Oct. 26 from 6p.m. to 8p.m. for Neisd College Night, a chance to visit with over 100 colleges. Also drop by the College and Career Center, located in the counseling office and speak to Mr. Walker for more college related things including SAT’s, ACT’s, scholarships, financial aid, and more.

Military

On the other hand, in a military career, individuals could have the satisfaction of becoming a hero by protecting their country. The military has 5 different branches including the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, and Navy. The advantages about a military career is that after time in service, individuals could potentially get college paid for by their branch and they get the opportunity to travel.

If a student is ready for travel, wants to earn money for college, perhaps the military interests them, or they just want a break from school, then the military might be for these students.

Reminder: For seniors interested in the military, he or she can speak to their counselor and they can help contact the right recruiter for their choice branch.

Full-Time Employment

If neither college or the military are for some students, a full-time job could be the right choice them. A job offers the students the ability to earn money right away as they save up for college.

If a student does decide on this option, their opportunity of having a degree might be limited since there is a possibility that they could get less financial aid with more income from them and their parents, unless they are on their own. In either case, students can get from help from the government, or FAFSA.

Reminder: Remember to visit Blossom Athletic Center on April 25. for Neisd Career Night from 6 p.m.-8p.m., for help finding a job.

Whichever choice students make, they must remember to think twice about it, as each of these three choices have ups and downs. In the end, seniors shouldn’t forget that they make the final choice that could potentially affect them for many years to come or perhaps the rest of their lives.

“Don’t wait until the last minute! Don’t think of college as a burden, think about it as an opportunity to fight for a future you desire,” College Advisor Mason Walker said.
