Student Saves Family from House Fire

Luis Navedo caught a glimpse of the smoke just down the street from Clear Springs Elementary school whilst driving down the street, Jan. 2, 2018.

The freshman basketball player almost just kept on driving, thinking it was a barbecue, but when he took his grandmother back to get her gloves, he realized it was a fire and began to act.

“I kinda just winged it, whenever I was driving down the street,” Navedo said “I saw the fire, I didn’t wanna just drive by it.”

Inside the house was a father, desperately trying to save his baby boy, barely leaving the house as Navedo swept in and helped them across the street and “got the baby inside and got him warm.”

The entire event was very emotional, for obvious reasons.

“The wife had came, because she was working in a bank,” Navedo said. “She was sad, she was in the middle of the street crying.”

Most of the family’s belongings were lost in the fire.

“Half the neighborhood came and gave them money and clothes and stuff, it was great to see that,” Navedo said.

The San Antonio Express-News wrote a story about the heroic act as well, giving Navedo a bit of New Year’s fame.
