Nathan Alvarez, junior wrestler, went to state this weekend at The Berry Center. It was his second appearance in two years, and this year he came away with a fifth place win.

“It’s pretty exciting,” Alvarez said before he left. “Some people don’t even get to go once.”

Last year at his first state match he was put against the returning state champ in his first round, which he had lost to. Although he did end up winning his next two matches but then losing a very controversial match, which left him to not place but still be top 8 in the state.

This year Alvarez has been putting in a lot more work for wrestling.

“Practice makes perfect, I wouldn’t have made it here without the constant practice,” he said.

When he’s done at school, he gets more practice at Ohana Academy, where he had originally started wresting 5 years ago.

Although he hoped for a first place, Alvarez said he is pleased knowing he has one more year of high school wrestling.

“It feels good,” Alvarez said. “I could have done better but now it’s time to fix that and be better next season.”
