American Horror Story: Apocalypse lives up to original seasons

American Horror Story Season 8: is it the end or just the beginning? The first episode of the eighth season of American Horror Story, Apocalypse, premiered Wednesday Sept. 12. Writer Ryan Murphy is continuing his theme of gross, vile and overall disturbing content. Many of the actors from the previous seasons have returned, including Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Emma Roberts, and many more.

Each of the previous seasons have been completely different from each other. Despite actors acting in several seasons, they have yet to play the same character twice. Each season has differed in time period and location. They all seem to have little to no connection. This season is supposed to bring the first season, Murder House, and season three, Coven, together.

Sarah Paulson’s new character, Venable, exhibits some deranged and terrifying behaviors bringing a twist to this season. Apocalypse is supposed to be bringing in characters from the other seasons back, and throwing them into this literal apocalypse. This can be seen with a mystery character who seems to be a blast from the past. This show has the elements of horror, it almost seems too over the top. The characters are stuck in an abandoned boarding school while a nuclear apocalypse happens outside. Everyone is struggling to survive as food runs out. They even turn to cannibalism.

Kathy Bates has also returned for the season. In the sixth season, Roanoke, she played a crazy butcher ghost, her character this season doesn’t seem too different. Unlike the other actors, she has only one character and won’t double as someone she played previously. Evan Peters is in this season, as he has had role in the seven previous seasons. His new character is a hairstylist who only got into the bunker because of his rich client. He brings along his grandma, as he couldn’t bare to leave her behind to die with the rest of humanity. Nearly all the characters from the season Coven are returning as themselves.

The first episode was insane; it was all over the place. No one really knew what was actually happening. Most of the world is dead, while the main characters are underground battling with their new society. Venable forces everyone to wear Victorian style clothes, and color codes everyone based on their social ranking. The grays are the lowest, the working class, while the purples are the highest. Venable herself wears black as she is in charge and not a part of any class.

American Horror Story Season 8 is absolutely horrifying. It is a great mix of horror, drama, and a little bit of romance. All of the seasons before were fantastic, and this one will be even better. This show is worth all the time spent watching it. The episodes are an hour long, but fit so much detail. It had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. It really makes me wonder if the apocalypse is the end, or the beginning.
