A Peculiar Novel: A Review

A few spoilers! You have been warned!

Imagine that you are a sixteen year old boy who was once extremely close to his grandfather. Then one day, a family tragedy strikes and you go insane. At least, that’s what the doctors say. But to you, you’re perfectly normal with an abnormal gift. This book was recommended to me by a friend and my mom. They both said this book was amazing. I read it and reread it, and I absolutely loved it. This book is a story you don’t want to skip over at the library.

In this thriller, you follow a sixteen year old boy named Jacob and his adventures with his grandpa’s past. With a gift to see “hollows” or “hollowgasts”–the creatures that killed his grandpa–Jacob travels to the island of Wales, the island his grandpa lived on as a young boy. He learns about the old orphanage that his grandfather lived in, and discovers secrets of it as well.

After running into old photos and notes his grandfather had once owned, Jacob begins exploring a loop set in the 1940s. As he travels back in time, he meets kids his grandpa used to know and live with, also known as the Peculiars. He uses his strange gift to protect the Peculiars from the hollows, and he ends up learning more about his grandfather’s past and getting in more trouble than expected.

In my opinion, this book is fantastic and totally worth the wait for it at the library. I was finished in a matter of days, and I immediately had me practically needing the sequel. If you’re into books with a spooky feeling, with black and white photos sprinkled throughout the peculiar atmosphere, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs is perfect for you. It’s absolutely addicting, and the writing is really good. It is the exact book that anyone with a good taste in mystical books with a storyline that will keep you on the edge of your seat, will want to read.
