Blue Gown

The tile floor was ice cold, my gown was like the ocean waves pulling up against the beige colored tile like sand. My tears flowed like rain droplets onto the ocean and were soon like a storm. I felt my own chest hurt as if someone rammed into it. It seemed like my world was slowly crumbling down. Tonight was supposed be one of the best nights of High school.

“Vera?” I heard a small voice call to me.

I looked up to see my four year old sister on the edge of my bathroom doorway. I tried to wipe off all my tears and my smeared makeup off as best as I could.

“Yes Giselle?” I tried to fake smile.

Giselle walked to over to me and sat on my lap. Her big brown eyes looked up at me and then placed her head onto my shoulder.

“Whats wrong sissy?” she pouted her pink lips.

“Nothing… it’s just things didn’t exactly work out tonight.” I gave another fake smile.

She looked into my eyes and scrunched her eyebrows.

“No you sad.. yours eyes are watery.” she wiped a falling tear drop off my cheek with her small delicate finger.

“No see? I’m happy,” I gave her a big grin.

“Then why is your eyes still sad?” she asked.

I couldn’t fool Giselle, not even for a second.  She was too smart to lie to. I pulled her head to my chest and stroke her black silky hair. I see her eyes flow to my right hand, she touched my wrist with her tiny hand and stroked my scars.

“Did you get a paper cut?” she asked.

I couldn’t help but give a small smile, “Yes I did. It was a very very long time ago though”

“Ow you need to be careful with paper. You have too much of the line things.”

“How about this, I won’t play with paper anymore if you stop getting into my makeup.” I giggled.

Giselle pouted her rosy pink lips and folded her arms. She took a minute and let out a little sigh.

“Fine. Just so you won’t get anymore paper cuts.” she scrunched her nose and dug her head into my lap.

I chuckled and stroked her head again.

“It’s past your bed time. Let’s tuck you into bed?” I asked. Giselle held her arms out to me so I could carry her. I gave in and carried her to her bed and gave her a kiss goodnight.

I laid back on my bed and looked at the ceiling. All of it came back to me again.

(2 hours before)

My friends and I danced around the whole time, my blue dress floating as I twirled around and around. But then I noticed Jason wasn’t here. I searched all over the gym and couldn’t to spot his brown chocolate curls anywhere.

Did he leave the dance without me?

Then I see him standing behind the stage, holding Janice Errin. She had straight bleach blonde hair, long legs, perfect cheekbones,a small delicate nose, and perfect pouty lips. She was like a supermodel.. unlike me. I see their lips touch and I felt my heart fall into the pit of my stomach. I ran out of the prom and to the front of the building.

I felt teardrops run off my cheeks, I needed to get out of here. I called my mom and it instantly went to voice mail. So I left her a voice mail,”Hey mom.. c-can you come and pick me up right now? Text me when you get this.” I ended to call.

“Vera?” I heard a voice behind me. I whipped around to see Jason.

“Yes?” I wiped my tears and crossed my arms.

“Where do you think you’re going?” He smirked.

“I’m going home Jason. Please leave me alone.”

He furrowed his eyebrows and chuckled.” I think I know what this is about. Well Ver I don’t have any intentions with being with her.”

“But your with me! And you cheated! Now I’m leaving you and this dance.” I shouted.

He roughly grabbed my arm. ” You don’t speak to me like that.”

I spat in his face, ” I can speak to you however I want.”

Then his right hand raised and smacked me across the cheek. I fell to the sidewalk and my left cheek stung.

“Vera! Oh my God! Get away from her or I’m calling the cops!” I heard a familiar voice. When I looked up I seen Isabel, my best friend.

He walked back into the dance as if nothing happened. He disgusted me.

“Come on I’m taking you home right now.” Isabel helped me into the car and took me home.

“You want me to stay with you?” she asked.

“No… I need to be alone for a while.”

“Okay, I love you. Text me okay?” she said.

I nodded and walked into the driveway when I heard my dad shut the door and run to the car door. He fumbled with his keys, trying to find the right one.

“Dad whats wrong?” I asked.

“Your mom. She got into a car crash, I need to go to the hospital. They said she was texting and driving.” he shivered.

“I need to go with you!”

“No. You have to watch Giselle.” he said as he hopped into the car and drove off.

I quietly peered in Giselle’s room to see her already asleep and tucked into her bed. Was my dad really going to leave her alone if I didn’t show up? I checked my phone to see two missed calls and a text message.. From my mother.

That’s when my tears started to pour out again and I walked into my bathroom and sat on the floor. My blue gown shining against the beige tile..

(Now)

“Can you come and watch Giselle?” I called Isabel.

“Sure, what happened?” I could hear the worry in her voice.

“I’ll tell you when you get here. Just come really fast, Okay?” I said.

We ended the call and 5 minutes later Isabel came into my house. I wiped all my makeup off and put on a pair of jeans and a t-shirt.
“So my mom got in a car crash, and shes in the hospital so I need you to watch her just for a little bit.”

I didn’t have time to talk anymore so I ran out the door and drove off to my car. As soon as I got to the hospital I asked the nurse for my mothers room number and led me to the room. As I opened the door I see my moms frail body under the sheets, she looked so confused. My dad stood up “Vera..” he said.

I pushed him away, “Mom? Are you okay?” I rushed by her side.

“Who are you?” she furrowed her brows.

Then I knew. I had lost her.
