William G. Morgan invented volleyball in 1895, originally calling it “mintonette”. Volleyball came from a dusty-old YMCA gymnasium in Holyoke, Massachusetts. By 1913 the development of volleyball on the Asian continent was assured. Volleyball is now one of the big five international sports and has experienced unprecedented growth over the last decade. Volleyball is the second most popular sport in the world, soccer taking first place. It is played all around the world.

The first World Championships were held in 1949 for men and 1952 for women. Volleyball was first introduced as an Olympics sport in 1964. Volleyball is the second most popular sport in the world, soccer taking first place. The longest recorded volleyball game took place in Kingston, North Carolina. It lasted 75 hours and 30 minutes.

Did you know? Most volleyball players jump about 300 times a match! That’s a lot right? What would they be doing to have to jump so much? Jump Serve, spike, block, and hit. “I would like to instill in people just to work hard. As long as they work at it, their dreams will happen.” says the famous Olympic U.S.A. volleyball player, Misty May Treanor.

I personally think that volleyball is so much fun! When I was little, I would go visit my grandpa and we would go over to the neighbor’s to play beach volleyball. As a little kid, I just though it was a game people played at parties, but now, I see it is a serious sport. I started getting serious about volleyball when I was about 10 or 11. A local high school held volleyball camps every summer for one week. I would go, try my best, have fun, and learn new things. I went three years in a row. It was so fun!

Summer of 2013, I was old enough to try out for the middle school volleyball team. Tryouts were held very early at the high school for a week. I tried very hard all week and got compliments from high school players and coaches.  The head coach said I was doing very well, he was also the uncle of one of the girls trying out. The day came when we found out who made the team. It was my turn to go and find out if i made it, but I didn’t. It turns out the head coach’s niece made the team, and so did ALL her friends. That day, I felt like i was done trying to get into sports and events against these same girls.

I almost stopped doing what I love, because I knew that I would be up against them. When school started back up again, I joined dance. I loved and still do love doing dance. School  ended and I tried to continue dance over the summer, but it didn’t work because i was to bust moving from New Mexico to San Antonio, Texas. May came, and i started school at Bradley Middle school. I saw they had volleyball and I went for it. I’m so glad I did. I am no longer doing dance, I am very involved and dedicated to volleyball. It’s so much fun and i’m back to doing what I love.
