Election Year. Everyone looks forward to seeing, hearing, and choosing new candidates for our country’s president. This year’s main candidates were Governor Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama. Each is part of a political party. Romney is a Republican, and President Obama is a Democrat. People all over our country voted who they would like to see in office.

You are officially allowed to vote when you are 18, but students all over NEISD got a chance for their voice to be heard. About 31,012 students (K-8) in the district voted. The total came out 10,550 votes for Governor Romney, and 18,140 votes for President Obama. Emma Cote (8) says, “I voted for Mitt Romney. Not because I like him, but because I don’t like Obama and his ideas.”

The National election was very close. President Obama won, but only because of the electoral votes. Our candidates were almost tied for popular vote. President Obama had 50.34% of the popular votes, and Governor Romney had 48.10%. Florida was never official, so not all the votes were counted.

Overall, this presidential race was very close. These candidates worked hard, and it looks like President Obama will have one more 4 – Year Term. Skye Palmer (7) told me that our Country and Year will be off to a great start, “because four years isn’t enough time to do something and Obama will help make our country better!”

Nuclear Power: Atomic Rival or Supportive Ally?

Nuclear Power, efficient friend that doesn’t leave your side or deadly enemy that could kill thousands? Julia Ortiz (8) asks, “Is Nuclear Power an abundant energy source that has endless supply, or is it a destructive power source that can contaminate our environment for generations?” Nuclear Power is a very hot discussion traveling around the world right now. It has its pro’s, like being inexpensive, but it also has con’s, like it’s after – effect, deadly radiation. Do you think nuclear power is helpful, or do you believe it will end all life on Earth?

Many people believe nuclear power is not the smartest choice of energy because it is so harmful. For example, one after – effect of nuclear power is its waste product, radiation. When radiation gets out, it can cause death. If an earthquake occurs, the power plant can have a meltdown and radiation can leak out, causing many deaths. In March 2011 a colossal Tsunami and earthquake struck Japan. This caused a nuclear power plant to have a meltdown. Radiation poured out and an entire city became contaminated. Everyone had to evacuate. Many people died before they could leave.

On the other hand, nuclear power can be very useful because it is a renewable resource. Many Fossil Fuels are running out, so scientists are searching for an alternative energy source. Nuclear Power is cheaper to produce so it doesn’t run out as quickly as Fossil Fuels. Because it is a greenhouse gas, it does not emit pollution when well contained. Nuclear Power could be the world’s newest source of energy.

Everything comes with a price; nuclear power is inexpensive, but its consequences can be very expensive. The amounts of nuclear power are a thimble per person, per year, multiplied by the number of people in the world. If you think about it, that adds up to a lot!

There are positives and negatives to utilizing Nuclear Power. Lina Forero says, “It’s a good source for energy crisis, but there are too many risks!” We care about our children’s future, so we should be against nuclear power due to all its dangers. But then again, should we be for it, so that when there’s no oil left, they will have an energy source? Is nuclear power our foe, or our life saver?

Early Outs

Ever wonder what it’s like to get out of school at 1:25p.m.? Well, you’ll find out soon. Tuesday October 16, 2012 thru Thursday October 18, 2012 are Garner’s early release (or early out) days. On these days you get to get out of school two hours early for parent – teacher conferences. Here’s what students have to say about it.

Lina Forero (8) says she likes early outs because, “we get to go home earlier and I can get an extra start on my homework.” Early outs are fun for everyone. Ashlyn Prieto (8) says, “I do vocal warm – ups for the play I’m in, and I try to study for any tests I have.” Early outs are a time where you can spend more time with friends, work on homework or study, and even just relax. Students can’t wait!

Teachers, on the other hand, get to have parent – teacher conferences on these days. Parents can meet with their child’s teacher and discuss grades and behavior.

Early outs also affect the schedule. On Tuesday you go to Testing in Advisory, 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, and then 3rd Period. On Wednesday you go to Testing in Advisory, 6th, 7th, 4th, 5ht, and then 8th period. On Thursday you go to Testing in Advisory, 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, and then 3rd Period.

This week will be full of fun and learning!
