End of school brings start of summer programs

The school year is almost over yet a wide array of programs will be offered throughout the summer. Students and faculty will host various camps and events on campus in efforts to build strong programs and friendships.

Debate

Dates and Times: August 2 – 6, 10 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Location: Speech rooms

Who: Incoming freshmen and returning members are strongly encouraged to attend

Debate Coach Barbara McCain hopes that this camp will help freshmen become more familiar with high school level speech. “It’s a big transition,” she said. “We want them to be ready to go to competition.”

Computer Science UIL

Dates and Times: Friday mornings, 9 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Location: Reagan library

Who: Anyone interested is invited – former Computer Science Pre-AP and AP students are encouraged to attend although no prior experience is necessary

The practices are led by students Tiffany Wong and Brooks Scharff. “[We want] to recruit some new people and get them ready and enthusiastic so we can build a new team,” Wong said.

Orchestra

Dates and Times: August 9-13, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Location: Orchestra room

Who: All orchestra students

Director Karen George plans to have students start reading music for the upcoming year, play games, and participate in team building activities.

Choir

Dates and Times: August 17, 6 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

Location: Choir room

Who: All registered members in choir

Director Christie Brown says that this event will be mostly a bonding time. “[We’ll] spend time getting to know one another.”

Band

* Mini Band Camp, Colorguard Camp, Percussion Camp, Competitive Auditions, and Band Leadership Training will be held over the course of the summer in addition to Band Camp.

Dates and Times: August 2 – 20, 9 a.m. – 9 p.m. (time varies)

Location: Band Hall and Field

Who: Current and incoming band members

Director Alan Sharps’ goal is for the band to learn the first movement of the show with all marching and playing as well as 12 stand tunes. “We hope to have taught all marching and musical fundamentals used during the marching season.”

Athletics

Dates and Times: June 14 – July 22, 7:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

Location: Athletic building

Who: Johnson, Tejeda, and Bush athletes are invited

“Athletes are going to get faster and stronger and develop conditioning for next season,” Football Coach Blaine Pederson said.

Dance

* The dance and drill teams will be attending camps hosted by 2 dance companies.

Dates: June

Locations: San Marcos, Brenham, Houston, San Antonio

Who: Dance and Drill officers and teams

Instructor Stephanie Trevino-Felan says that the camps will be an opportunity for the team to become unified. “Honestly, it’s about them coming together as a new dance family and learning to work together so they can have another successful year.”
