The Jags failed yet again in their attempt to pick up a district win this year. Johnson got off to a fast start Saturday night against Churchill when they scored on their first two drives, taking a 14-0 lead just three minutes and 49 seconds into the game. However, after the quick start the Jags let up 21 unanswered points. In a game that was reminiscent of their season, the Jags lost by a final of 38-27.
On the Jags first possession of the game, junior quarterback Cohner Mokry took the snap from center Ryder Burke, dropped back and threw a pass right over the middle of the defense to senior running back Zach Prevost who took it the distance for a 77-yard score, giving the Jags a 7-0 lead. Churchill’s ensuing possession was short lived when the Jags forced a quick three and out. Prevost was at it again on the Jags very next drive, this time on the ground when he ripped off an huge run that set the Jags up deep inside Charger territory. Later in the drive, Prevost scored on a 6-yard touchdown giving the Jags a commanding 14-0 lead just under four minutes into the game.
After such a fast start, the Jags gave up 21 unanswered points and didn’t score again until junior Zack Bradley did what he does best, be special. After a 39-yard field goal by Churchill, the Jags Zack Bradley took the following kickoff back for a 98-yard touchdown with twelve seconds left in the first half giving the Jags the lead and momentum heading into halftime.
Unfortunately for Johnson, they were unable to carry that momentum over into the second half of play. Churchill’s quarterback Warren Truesdale proved to be too much for the Jags to stop, as he was part of all three of the Chargers’ second half touchdowns. Truesdale himself had as many rushing yards as the Jags had total yards, and accounted for five of Churchill’s scores; three rushing, and two passing.
The Jags showed signs of a comeback when they scored on a 15-yard pass from Mokry to junior Bo Molina with 2:32 left, cutting Churchill’s lead to 11 points. However, it proved to be too little too late, and the Jags now face a 2-6 season record, and an 0-4 district record. Johnson faces the Reagan Rattlers tomorrow night at Blossom’s Commalander Stadium on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
