Not so typical sports

Although Johnson has a variety of classes, sports, and clubs, many students have a certain course they would like to add if they had the opportunity to. Football, baseball, cheer-all the typical high school extra-curriculars, but there are many more that people would like the chance to participate in.
“A lot of students don’t get the opportunity to express themselves freely in a public school setting, so it would be just awesome if we had the chance to add whatever activity we, as individuals, would like to,” sophomore Dacoda Clarke said.
Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played by 11 players at a time on an oval-shaped field. Cricket is really similar to baseball in several ways.
“I would add cricket because it is a sport that isn’t in the U.S and it’s a lot like baseball, so baseball players would be really interested and could play both baseball and cricket,” junior Connor Gesell said.
A new and unique sport called disc golf, more popularly known as “frolf” has begun to arise among students. Frolf is a combination between frisbee and golf, in which players throw a flying disc, or a frisbee into a basket or at a target.
“Frolf is better than drinking water after walking across the desert,” senior Kyle Campbell said.
Though we are fortunate enough to have a lacrosse team joined with Reagan, many students believe that if we had our own lacrosse team, it would thrive greatly.
“I would add lacrosse because the guys who play it are usually hot, it’s fun to watch, contact sports are just awesome in general, and it gives students another opportunity to earn scholarships,” junior Morgan Stearns said.
Polo, a game where players on opposing teams work to drive a small wooden or plastic ball into the opposing team’s goal using a long-handled mallet.
“Polo would be great because it’s just a bunch of hot boys riding on horses and wearing Ralph Lauren. Very classy,” senior Destiny Castillo said.
Contrary to popular belief, cheerleading and gymnastics in fact share plenty of differences along with their many similarities.
“Gymnastics would be a lot cheaper than cheerleading is, and you wouldn’t have to compete against other teams. My mom had gymnastics in her high school as a teenager, so why not us?” sophomore Mac Bryant said.
Harry Potter is easily one of the most popular topics and obsessions in high school recently, and one way to admire is with, well, Quidditch.
“Not only is it a fantastic physical activity to engage in, but it is also something that many students look up to. It’s just part of our generation and I know for sure that Quidditch would have plenty of members,” junior Shannon Carr said.
Water polo is a team sport where players tread water and attempt to pass a ball while being defended by other opponents. The team that wins is the team that scores the most goals into the opposing team’s goal, which is defended by a goalie.
“Water polo would be fun to have because it’s something that the south hasn’t seen and it would be something totally new,” junior Brie Foresman said.
