Each year the Jaguar community returns to school with the Homecoming ceremony.  The football game will remain the same as the Johnson Jaguars take on New Braunfels,  meanwhile the dance is being held in a new venue, Blossom Athletic Center.

“Since our freshmen class is so big, there would be no room in the gym,” senior Erin Howard said.

Blossom was chosen for it’s large space, compared to last year’s dance in the small gym.

“[It’s at Blossom] because the school is growing, more enrollment of students that will be attending [the dance],” AP Steve Magadance said. “We need a venue with more capacity.”

This year’s Homecoming theme is “The Gatsby’s Gala,” as the Jaguar community returns to the Roaring Twenties on Saturday, September 22.

“Compared to the last two years [the theme] is better,” junior Miguel Ponce.

Johnson’s Student Council prepares Blossom for the dance, making sure everything goes according to plan.

“Basically we make sure everything goes smoothly,” Howard said, “We do the set up and take down, pretty much all the behind the scenes stuff.”

This year, a new organization was hired for the homecoming set up.

“There’s a new organization that does the set up called Theme Travelers,” Howard said. “They make the decorations over the top.”

The take down process of all the decorations is completed by Student Council the next day, as the Homecoming dance ends late into the night.

“The dance starts around 7pm, but it normally dies down around 11pm,” Howard said, “[So we] usually take the [decorations] down the next day.”

Homecoming dance is a tradition that many participate in throughout high school, along with the spirit week that is held from Sept. 17 to Sept. 21.

“During [spirit week] Monday is Moxie Monday, where you come dressed in your bling, Tuesday is tie day [which] you can come with a bow tie or regular tie, Wednesday is dress in black and white,” Howard said. “Thursday is ‘Twinkie Day’ where you come dressed up like your date, and Friday is Spirit Day like wearing mums.”

As Homecoming approaches, tickets go sale at the school store, and those students that go early will get a Homecoming t-shirt given on a first come first serve basis.

“Tickets [and t-shirts] can be found at the School Store for $25,” Howard said.
