For the first time at Johnson, a student in DECA’s formerly Distributive Clubs of America will become a district officer ifor the next school year.

“DECA is a marketing club designed to enhance learning through interviewing competitions, public speaking, [and] we do community service events,” DECA sponsor Kevin Rubel said.

DECA was founded in 1946 when cooperative programs in marketing education were becoming more popular at schools. Students began to form what DECA is now by creating a foundation for a meeting for federal education officials to establish DECA.

“Every student organization has a leadership structure. DECA has district level and then state level officers as well. For the first time Johnson had a student nominated and then selected to be one of the district officers for the next school year,” Rubel said

“ [ Sweny Maredia ] is the new vice president for campaigns. This is her first year in DECA [and] next year will be her second year. She has advanced to state through competition so she will be attending state, as well as winning her seat as a district officer for next year,” Rubel said

“I’m going to be working with the president from another school and we’re going to try to help our students better prepare for the international conference in Orlando in April and we’re going to try to make changes to get more members and just to have study sessions together in the district,” Maredia said.
