Camps, practices held over the summer

Students involved in extracurricular activities need to start making time over the summer to attend camp and practices in order to be involved in the program next school year.

Cheerleaders are given the camp date and summer practices schedule at the tryout meeting in February and are required to commit to those dates before trying out for cheerleader,” Cheer coach Shannon Wylie said.

Cheerleaders attend the UCA summer camp at Texas A&M University from July 29 to August 1.

“We practice the week before [July 22 to July 27] to properly prepare for camp,” Wylie said.

Band camp starts on July 29 as well for Nationals team members.

“Approximately 300 kids go to camp during the summer,” band director Jarrett Lipman said.

Band camp lasts three weeks, and all practices are held at school.

“[If a student isn’t here] we go case by case—if it’s excused, they might be able to be caught up. If it’s not excused, they might only participate in concert band or as an alternate. This rarely is an issue,” Lipman said.

All-State Choir camps last approximately four days.

“We have a “get to know you” choir camp at Johnson the evening of August 12 for three hours,” Choir teacher Christie Brown said.

Approximately 75 students go to the Johnson camp in August, and about 20 go to the All-State Choir camp.

“Johnson Camp is completely for fun and optional and All-State camp is also optional,” Brown said.
